Portalocity to the Old Stein Inn; Tuesday Evening [02/14[.

To say Kurt was a bundle of nerves was an understatement. As much as he kept trying to tell himself that there was nothing to worry about, that it was just a Valentine's date, with Libby, at a nice restaurant, his mind kept yelling that that was EXACTLY reason to be worried!

He had gone back and forth for what seemed like an eternity trying to decide what would be best for their first big official date as boyfriend and girlfriend. And finally, he had found the perfect place- a nice German family-owned restaurant that really did make him feel like he was sitting in the open-air markets back home. The Olde Stein Inn had been around longer than he had, and it was listed as one of the best German restaurants in the state. So, after a bit of research, Kurt had made reservations and with some help from The Professor and Logan, he had managed to get the entire outdoor patio area reserved just for him and Libby.

And after what felt like an eternity planning and preparing, Kurt was there at Portalocity waiting for Libby to show up so they could go on their date. Kurt was wearing a nice suit. that he had gotten for the occasion. And he made a mental note to get Storm and Kitty on video chat sometime to thank them again for helping him shop for it.

Libby
Libby was feeling quite a bit nervous herself, no matter how many times she told herself that there was no reason to be. It was Valentine's Day. She and Kurt were dating. It was just a normal things that normal teenagers did out here in the normal world. And she's looked into things and researched extensively, so the odds of her making some silly mistake were fairly low, and she knew that Kurt didn't have a lot of experience with this sort of thing, either, so they were kind of in the same boat, and if she messed up, he might not eve notice it or realize it...

Still, she was nervous all the same, right down to whether or not the dress she wore was nice and acceptable right down to whether the gift she had with her, in a neat little gift bag was too much, or just right, or not enough, but she resolved that there was only one way to find out, and if it did end up as an unlikely disaster for whatever reason, at least they'd tried.

So there she was, walking over to Portalocity and spotting Kurt with absolutely no trouble at all.

"Hi, Kurt," she said. "Are you ready?"

Kurt
You were going to have to forgive Kurt for a minute or two Libby. He really was trying not to stare but... well, you couldn't blame the boy for taking a moment to appreciate how amazing his girlfriend looked. When he was finally able to think clearly, Kurt walked towards Libby, a huge grin spreading across his face as he did.

"Wow," he said still grinning, "You look beautiful, Libby. I mean, you always do... but the dress is..." Kurt bit his lip and took a breath. He was already fumbling around and messing things up.

"You look amazing Libby" he said a little more calmly. "And I have been ready for tonight!'

Libby
Maybe Libby should have gone with something more pink than red; then it would nicely match the pleased blush that rushed to her cheeks as she ducked her head a little, self-consciously tucking her hair behind her ear. "I wasn't sure--" she started, but cut herself off, reminding herself that it didn't matter how uncertain she was about how to dress up for this, even with all of Zo's help and opinions, and she tried again.

"Thank you," she said, smiling over at Kurt now, her head tilted a little as she considered his outfit. "And you look very handsome. And you always do, too, but you do wear a suit very well, you know."

Kurt
"Thanks" Kurt said with a nod and a shy smile of his own as he turned slightly. "Storm helped me pick it out at that last trip back home I made last weekend. Was pretty easy to get the fit right. Just had to make accommodations for the tail" he said with a grin, giving it a small swish for emphasis.

"Oh I almost forgot! A special part of the special date night!" Kurt reached into the small bag held in the aforementioned tail and pulled out a small box and handed it to Libby. Inside was a simple yet hopefully appropriate corsage, one for each of them.

Libby
Libby felt a small swirl of nervousness, mingled with a bit of her own nervousness about the gift she'd brought, not knowing when was the right time to give it to Kurt, but she would just nudge that aside for now as she blinked a little at the box being handed to her. She looked at Kurt with a little bit of uncertainty before she opened it and let out a small sound.

"Oh!" And then she laughed, feeling the heat of a lot of different emotions rushing to her face. "It's an iris! Because of the state flower," she looked back at Kurt eagerly, "right?"

Kurt
"Aye! I was trying to find just the right flower. And well, when I saw the iris, I knew I had to get it. For that, and because, well..." Kurt gave a somewhat awkward grin as he looked at Libby fondly. "It also reminded me of when we were decorating the cookies. I... I am sure that sounds silly but... I am glad you like it" he said shaking his head and pushing down that nervousness again.

Libby
"I don't think that sounds silly at all," Libby assured him, with a smiled and a pleased, touched spark in her eyes as she looked at Kurt. "That's a good thing to be reminded of."

Kurt
Kurt smiled and looked back at Libby.

"Do... would you like any help, putting it on I mean?" he asked with a nod towards the corsage.

Storm had shown him how to put one on and had advised against anything with pins, so there wasn't a risk of damaging whatever dress Libby had decided to wear. Kurt also was pretty sure him trying to work a complicated pin fastening would end with one or both of them getting pricked. So, Kurt was glad he had gone with that kind of corsage.

Libby
"Oh." An awkward little blush sprung up across Libby's cheeks, as considered the corsage for a moment, and then nodded. Careful to balance everything with the bag holding Kurt's present with the box holding the corsage, she held out her wrist tentatively. "Yes, please. If ...if you don't mind."

Kurt
Kurt nodded and carefully picked up the corsage and, with minimal hand-shaking involved, slipped it on over Libby's hand.

He felt a tingle of something, he wasn't sure what, run through him as his hand brushed against Libby's. It felt a little like a static shock, but he swore it went through his entire body. When he was finished, he dropped his hands slowly, leaving Libby to admire the flower more closely if she wanted.

"It looks beautiful, I think," he said softly. "It... it's not too tight or anything, is it?"

Libby
Libby herself felt like her face was positively on fire as she watched Kurt carefully put the corsage around her wrist, trying her best to keep her own hand nice and still to make it easier for him, trying not to get too distracted every time she felt his fingers against her skin as he did so.

And admiring it was exactly what she did when his hand fell away.

"It's perfect," she said, caught in the moment for a short while before she seemed to remember herself...and the gift she had for Kurt, as well.

"Oh, and this is for you," she said, holding it out a little awkwardly, because she wasn't sure if this was the best time for it, but since he had gotten her the flowers, it seemed like the right place to reciprocate. It wasn't even much, just a teddy bear and a box of chocolates, because that seemed like the right kind of gift to get for this sort of thing.

Kurt
Kurt perked up a bit, thankful for the distraction from that tingling feeling that was still zipping through him a bit. Carefully he opened the box and then looked at Libby as he pulled out the gifts.

"Oh Libby," he said, a smile spreading over his face. "I love it!" Kurt looked at the box of chocolates, but his attention was definitely going to that bear. Slipping the bag over to his tail, he held the bear close and gave it a small hug.

"It's perfect," he then dropped his gaze slightly for a moment before looking back at Libby. "It's... actually the first teddy bear I've ever gotten. On the farm, it was mostly handmade toys when I had them." Kurt faltered for a moment not knowing just what to do with the sudden urge to give Libby a huge hug. But he managed to push it down and just gave her a huge grin. "I love it Libby, thank you!"

Libby
It was a good thing she'd gone with the red dress after all, because now Libby could be sure that at least her face and her dress were nicely matched, ducking her head a little at the praise and the pleased feeling that it seemed to have gone over so well, that it wasn't too simply or corny or expected.

"You're welcome," she said, smiling fondly at Kurt, especially at his resourcefulness in having his tail hold onto the bag. "I'm just really glad you like it. I figured, since he's got those roses, I've got the flowers covered, as well."

Kurt
"It's perfect, Libby" Kurt said with a happy grin. "Everything has been perfect so far, just... just like you" he added with a small bow as he looked up at Libby and held out his arm for her. "And to make it all official and everything, Libby Hazlett, would you do me the honor of being my Valentine?" And there he waited, stomach doing summersaults up into his throat a bit as he waited for Libby's response.

Libby
Libby looked about ready to argue that she wasn't so sure about her being perfect, feeling a sheepish awkwardness creeping up on her even more strongly now, but then Kurt presented his arm, and, with a little leap of nervousness in her chest, she very cautiously, very gingerly, went to loop her arm lightly into it.

"The honor would be mine," she told him, and maybe, just maybe, although she kept the loop of their arms only lightly entwined, she leaned her shoulder into Kurt's just a little. "Although, fair warning, I've never been anyone's Valentine before, I might not be very good at it."

Kurt
"Well, then I guess I am in good company then. Because I am new to all this too" Kurt said as he hooked his arm, just a little more, a grin spreading over his face.

"Shall we go and see what this whole Valentine's day thing is all about?" Kurt asked as he gave a nod towards the door. "I do believe we have a portal waiting to take us to someone special today."

Libby
When Libby paused a moment to draw in a slightly exaggerated, bolstering breath, she'd mostly meant it as a joke, but it ended up feeling much more genuinely needed than she expected. Still, despite that little build-up of anticipation and a little bit of nerves, she smiled at Kurt and nodded.

"Let's go," she agreed, "and see if it's really all it's cracked up to be."

But, considering it was going to be with Kurt, she was pretty sure it would be all of that and more.

Kurt
Kurt smiled and then led them on their way to catch their portal. There thankfully, wasn't much hassle from the Gnomes, probably because Logan had been the one to make the reservations since the Gnomes had been giving Kurt trouble about setting this up since he was a student and needed adult permission or some nonsense. Most people tried their best not to annoy Logan.

So with the portal open and ready, Kurt gave Libby a small nudge, his arm still linked with hers. This was it, it was actually happening. And beyond all the nervousness tumbling around inside, Kurt was on cloud on nine, as if the grin on his face wasn't enough proof.

"I present to you.... The Old Stein Inn, " Kurt said with a small wave towards the portal and the scene that was showing through.

Libby
Perhaps it was just the strangeness that still lingered over the idea that she was traveling by portal, but stepping through with her arm around Kurt's and arriving right there in front of the restaurant really let it hit her that she was out there, on a date, an actual date, like normal, worldly teenagers went on, without a chaperone and everything, with her non-parental-approval boyfriend, for a secularized holiday with its root in idolatry...and, for a brief moment, it was a little...overwhelming. Her hold on Kurt's arm tightened a little as her breath caught, all her nerves and excitement tangling up in her stomach and making her feet feel like lead all of a sudden.

But looking over at Kurt, she found herself smiling and her reservations fade away into something much more confident. "This looks great, Kurt."

And the next breath she drew in was very intentional, just to breathe in the air, and her grin went a little crooked. "Smells good, too."

Kurt
For a moment Kurt was worried it was too much, too fast, and that Libby would say she wasn't so sure about their date night anymore. He would have of course honored her wishes, but he couldn't deny the feeling of immense relief that washed over him when she gave him a smile and mentioned the look and smell of their social date night destination.

"It's one of the most popular German restaurants in the state," he said with a smile. "I found it when trying to figure out where we should go. It... felt like a good fit for us," he added. "I had debated trying to set up a portal so we could actually go to Germany. But there wasn't enough time to plan something that big. So... we'll just have to save it for our next big special date sometime."

Libby
"If we were to go all the way over to Germany," Libby pointed out, "I wouldn't want to go to just some old restaurant, anyway. I'd want to go have dinner with your folks, while we were there; it'd probably be much better at home than going out, anyway."

Granted, Libby's entire restaurant experience, outside of the ones on the island, had been the once-in-a-blue-moon visit to a pancake house for very special, very rare occasions, so her thoughts on restaurant food skewed a little bit toward the underwhelming.

Kurt
"Aye, for sure!" Kurt said with a nod. "We'd have to use an entire school holiday for a trip like that to really make the most of it! Muti and Vatti are already talking about wanting to meet you so..." Kurt gave Libby a small grin. "But that is for another time. Right now you can experience a little taste of Germany right here!"

Kurt smiled, fighting the sudden surge of butterflies as he led Libby towards the open patio area that was empty and decorated. There were simple thematic decorations and candle light, a simple centerpiece, and a hopefully not too over-the-top table set just for the two of them. He waited, giving Libby a chance to take it all in, and nervously waited for her reaction.

Libby
"It's kind of incredible, isn't it?" Libby had to note, as they made their way toward their seats. "That the world's as big and wide as it is, but sometimes all you have to do is just go a little bit of a ways out and still get to experience a culture from an entirely different part of the world!"

Of course, it was probably easier to be impressed by that sort of thing when, before, the only culture you really knew barely extended beyond your back porch.

And when they reached their little table, and all the set-up, Libby did take a moment to take it all in, with another wave of feeling excited and nervous and just a little bit overwhelmed. But it was a good kind of overwhelmed; she felt a little bit like that this was what all those crazy skydivers much feel when they're up there in the plane, getting ready to take the plunge.

"Oh," she breathed out, "they really get into the spirit of the holiday here, too, huh?"

Kurt
"Too much?" Kurt asked softly as he slowly let go of Libby's arm and watched her, a little worried now he had not toned it down enough. "Logan wanted me to get us 'the works' but that definitely would have been overkill for a first Valentine's Day date," he said with a small laugh because that was exactly Logan's style.

Libby
"Not too much," Libby assured Kurt, with a soft shake of her head, as he let go of her arm and she immediately missed the feeling of it entwined in hers, but it would be a little difficult to sit and have dinner if they were literally attached at the elbows the whole time, and she let out a small laugh. "It does make me wonder, though, what the works would have been!"

Kurt
"Oh something about someone paying violin table-side during dinner, a LOT more rose petals evidently, and a super fancy menu selection. Also, a lot of wine and champagne and such, which I know isn't our style," Kurt said with a smile. "I figured this was more our speed," he said as he pulled Libby's chair out a little for her.

Libby
"I'm definitely more sparkling grape juice than champagne," Libby agreed, with a small chuckle, although she sort of thought someone playing violin would have been kind of nice. Still, everything was already more than what she would have expected, and she nodded gratefully to Kurt with a shy blush springing up to her cheeks again. She ducked her head, tucking back the curtain of her hair behind her ear, as she sat down. "Thank you."

Kurt
Kurt smiled and nodded as he helped Libby take her seat then took his seat across from her at the small table. He looked at Libby for a moment, still trying to convince himself that this was all real and not just some dream. The butterflies were dancing but this time more from excitement than nervousness and with his fur tingling slightly as the invisible blush crept over his face, Kurt picked up the menus and handed one over to Libby.

"Let me know if you need any help figuring out what something is," he said with a smile. "And it's not listed on the menu but I did check and they do have non-alcoholic drinks so no worries there!"

Libby
And as she get settled in her seat and Kurt took the one across from her and handed her the menu, Libby thought she would be grateful for a chance to focus her attention on something else other than her nerves and excitement and the overall surreal feeling of everything. But her head was swirling with so many thoughts that when she looked at the menu, lower lip unconsciously caught between her teeth with the attempt to concentrate, she felt like she could barely even read it, all the words turned to gibberish as if there was no room left in her brain for reading them.

"It might take me a while to figure out what I might like," she admitted, a little quietly, a little sheepishly, lifting her eyes momentarily from the menu since it was was slightly useless at the moment, to look over at Kurt with a small smile. "There's so much to choose from, and I bet all of it's good..."

Kurt
"Hey, no rush at all," Kurt said softly. "We have all day. We can start with an appetizer, give us some more time to mull over the choices."

Kurt looked over the menu in his hand a moment and then smiled. "We could get the 'Metzger platter' to start us off. That's a lot like the veggie and fruit trays you bring to game night. Meats, cheese, veggies, fruits, and herb dips. But the fries, onion rings, or fried pickles are probably good too."

Libby
Libby was about to make a joke about how maybe getting the Metzger platter might inspire her to really step up her veggie stick game, but something else caught her attention much more at the end and threatened to not let go.

"Fried pickles?" she asked, looking up at Kurt and feeling certain she'd misheard, but she was clearly very amused by it all the same.

Kurt
"You never had fried pickles? Oh they are amazing... if you like pickles that is" Kurt added with a grin. "They are usually sliced pickles or sometimes pickle spears that are breaded and fried. Like onion rings but with pickle slices instead." He looked at Libby and gave a small shy grin. "We can... get some and if you don't like them we can try something else. We don't have to try just one thing."

Kurt after all would not let fried pickles go to waste. But this date was special and he wanted to make sure it was good for Libby. He wanted to make sure this was an amazing time for her, in every way. Kurt felt pretty confident about how things were going thus far... but the food had been a bit of a worrying point for him since he started planning their big date night. He hoped things would keep going as well as they had, and if they didn't, he hoped he'd be able to figure things out on the fly.

Libby
"I guess it really does go to show," said Libby, marveling a little as Kurt confirmed that her ears jadn't just been playing tricks on her, "people'll fry just about anything! But I would like to try them, I do love a good pickle, but I never even heard of them being fried before! Guess it makes sense, though. You've got fried okra and tomatoes and onions...why not a pickle, too?"

Kurt
"Yeah... people can get a little crazy with the fried foods at time," Kurt said with a nod. He glanced over the menu again then looked back at Libby. "So, order of fried pickles, anything else you would like to start with to eat? I think I'll just start with water for now and then get another drink with dinner. Pretty sure soda wont taste too good with pickle juice," he said with a bit of a face at that thought.

Libby
"I think the pickles will be fine," Libby decided, after a moment to think about it, failing again to really focus on the words on the menu very well and taking that as a sign. "We wouldn't want to fill up on other things before we even get to the main meal itself! But do you think they have lemonade?"

Lemonade, she felt, went good with just about anything.

Kurt
"I'm sure they do, and we can find out for sure right now," Kurt said confidently as the waiter walked over to take their order.

"Welcome to The Olde Stein Inn," the waiter said with a smile. "Can I get the two of you started off with drinks and maybe an appetizer?"

Kurt gave Libby a small smile then opened the menu back to the appetizers.

"Yes, we'd like the fried pickles to start with, please. And do you happen to have lemonade by chance?"

"Of course. We have fresh lemonade, made with real lemons. We also have strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry fruit we can add to any lemonade if you would like."

"I think I'll have a water and sweet tea to start with," Kurt said before turning to Libby with a small smile. "What about you, Libby?"

Libby
"Oh, lemonade with raspberry," Libby said, without hesitation, eager to latch onto that as soon as the waiter had mentioned the fruit, and then seemed to swiftly remember her manners. "Please. Thank you. That sounds very nice."

Kurt
The waiter smiled and nodded, writing it all down before turning to leave. As he did Kurt turned back to Libby and gave her a small smile. Everything seemed to be going well so far. And Libby seemed like she was enjoying herself. Kurt tried to make himself relax a little.

"It's really pretty here isn't it?" he asked as casually as he could, looking around at the open patio area and the trees and flowers and everything planted around the place. "There's also a lake a few blocks away. We could... we could always go for a walk after dinner and check it out. It's supposed to be really nice at night."

Libby
"That's assuming," Libby joked with a smile, "we don't eat so much that we can barely walk at all afterwards!"

Obviously, she had no intention of eating that much, but she thought it was funny to think about, and, with this menu, it definitely wouldn't be hard to go that much overboard if you let yourself!

"But that sounds really nice," she added. "I'd love to see it."

And with the current company was definitely a bonus.

Kurt
"We'll see what we feel like after we eat then," Kurt said with a smile and quick wink. "if needed, I can always just port us down to the water."

There was the appetizer, main course, and of course dessert, so they just might be too full to do much more than walk back to get their portal home. But that would be fine. Kurt couldn't help but have that smile spread across his face because, he was on a date, a real date, with Libby! That alone made it an amazing night already.

"We have all night and plenty of time to do whatever we want...." Kurt trailed off and gave a small chuckle as he looked up. "Which looks like right now means enjoying some tasty food!" he added as the waiter returned with the drinks and fried pickles.

Libby
"Oh, thank you," Libby said to the waiter, with a big, grateful smile when the pickles and drinks showed up, and then, leaning forward a little toward Kurt with a sheepish, somewhat awkward blush, almost-whispered, "We should probably figure out what we're going to be eating now, instead of already thinking what we're going to be doing later, huh?"

Kurt
"Right you are," he said as he reached over and grabbed one of the pickle slices and popped it into his mouth. "We're getting a bit ahead of ourselves aren't we?"

Picking up the menu, Kurt started looking over the options, most of which he was semi-familiar with since he had scoped out the menu back when he first decided to come here for their big date. He kind of had an idea already of what he was in the mood for, but there was always time to change his mind. Kurt looked over at Libby after a moment with a soft smile.

"Let me know if you need me to describe any of the dishes to you or anything."

Kurt had been doing his fair share of 'not really looking at the menu' himself and had caught Libby's gaze briefly a few times. And each time the heat in his face seemed to grow a bit more, as did the grin on his face.

When Libby started talking, he lifted his gaze once more to give her his full attention. And after considering the question, he scanned the menu for a moment.

"If you want to stick with something a bit more familiar with a more elegant flare then the Germuse Spatzle may be a good choice. Spatzle are those noodle-like dishes I've made for us a few times," Kurt said with a grin. "For something new and different, the Sample Platter might be a good option."

"Great minds think alike then," Kurt said with a smile. "I was going to order that with the salmon myself." It was a bit much but given his normal appetite, it was still a little on the lighter side of things overall. "Should be finished with the pickles by the time the main meal comes out."

Kurt took a moment to look up from the menu for a moment and looked at Libby, a fond smile spreading over his face as he took a moment just to soak it all in, and almost try and remind himself that this was all actually happening and wasn't just a big realistic dream.

Kurt seemed lost for a moment, then kind of snapped out of it, realizing he had been staring at Libby again. Dropping his gave a popping a few of the pickle slices into his mouth to keep him from saying something awkward at that moment, Kurt found the table very interesting all of a sudden.

When Kurt finally lifted his gaze he was about to say something when the waiter returned to see if they were ready. Kurt looked over and gave Libby a small grin because, of course, that was the timing luck he would have.

"I'll have the Gemüse Spätzle with salmon, please," he said as he put the menu down and then looked over at Libby so she could put in her order. He gave her an encouraging smile and nod.

"Gemüse Spätzle with salmon," the waited repeated with a nod at Kurt, "and one Gemüse Spätzle with chicken for the lady," he confirmed with a small grin at Libby and then headed off to put their order in.

Kurt popped another couple of the pickles into his mouth and then waited, making sure to let Libby get back to them. As he sat there, Kurt couldn't help but think back to how different things had been a year ago. He and Libby had just been starting to really talk and getting to know each other. There had been a few simple carnations and a rose or two exchanged between them.... and now, they were here, at a nice restaurant, on an actual date.

Kurt felt that delighted flutter in his stomach again as his eyes drifted to the flowers on Libby's wrist, and he thought about the adorable teddy bear sitting in the bag carefully tucked under his chair. He didn't ever think something like this would have been possible a few years ago.... and he was determined to find some way to let Libby know how much it meant to him.

"Happy Valentine's Day' Kurt said with a small smile, wanting to say so much more but not really know how just then.
